Hiring a marketing agency is a leap of trust, you're handing someone the way your business looks to the world. Here's a practical checklist to reduce that risk.
Questions to ask before you sign
What exactly is included?
Get specifics: how many posts, which platforms, whether design and captions are covered, whether ads are managed, and how often you'll receive a report. Vague answers here are the biggest warning sign.
Who will actually work on my account?
Some agencies show you a founder in the sales call, then hand your account to a junior team member you never meet. Ask directly who will be doing the work day to day.
Do I own my accounts and content?
Your Instagram, Google Business Profile, and ad accounts should be under your ownership, with the agency given access, not the other way around. If an agency insists on controlling accounts under their own login, that's a real risk if the relationship ends.
How is performance reported?
A good agency shows you real numbers, reach, enquiries, cost per result, not just "engagement is up" without context. Ask to see a sample report before signing.
What happens if I want to leave?
Ask about the notice period and what happens to your content, ad accounts, and any ongoing campaigns if you decide to end the relationship.
Red flags to watch for
- Guaranteed lead numbers with no context on budget or industry
- No clear breakdown of what's included in the price
- Reluctance to show past work or real client examples
- Pressure to sign immediately without time to think
- No registered business identity, just an individual freelancer claiming to be an agency
Signs of a trustworthy agency
- A registered business (MSME/Udyam registration, GST, or equivalent)
- Willingness to show real client work and results
- Clear, written scope of what's included
- You keep ownership of your own accounts
- Honest answers, including telling you what won't work for your business
